Athena founded the Sunshine Foundation in the fifth grade, after she was invited to host a fundraising concert for an international-level charity organization. This experience introduced her to the world of philanthropy, and throughout several fundraising events, Athena was exposed to the many local and global causes that calls for our awareness. At the concert, Athena unexpectedly became the top fundraiser despite being twelve years old, which empowered her to realize the positive difference that youth can make within their communities.
Inspired, Athena sought greater involvement in the organization’s activities, but encountered a challenge. As a student-athlete regularly competing in weekend tournaments, Athena faced the difficulty of attending the regular Saturday meetings. Speaking with other youth in the community, she understood that many faced the same obstacle, despite sharing a vision of creating positive change in the world.
Athena and her sister devised a solution, establishing the Sunshine Foundation, a nonprofit charity that sought to eliminate barriers to entry and participation for youth. As long as individuals were willing to contribute, scheduling is flexible. Rather than adhering to fixed meeting times, the foundation adopted a unique clubs-based model that coordinates events with greater consideration for individual availability. This approach garnered the support from many in the community, and today, the foundation has rapidly grown from two members to hundreds and thousands.
The foundation’s operational model has received much-valued international recognition and endorsements from ambassadors of the United Nations, federal representatives, provincial legislators, school officials, and other community leaders and educators.
In six years, the Sunshine Foundation has expanded to six international branches, and Athena hopes that the foundation’s story will inspire more youth to join! Founded on the value of dedication and compassion, the foundation hopes to demonstrate that whether in the philanthropic world or beyond, challenges can serve as opportunities for change—and that anyone can make a difference!

The club connected people through squash—building a platform for members to exchange skills and uphold sportsmanship. It also invited Cynthia Yu, Charity Ambassador of Sunshine Foundation and member of the Columbia University Squash Team, to share insights on “squash techniques, the gains squash brings to athletes, and the spirit of perseverance and courage in striving for excellence.”Additionally, the club provided free professional technical guidance for new players. It further leveraged the sport to foster friendships among community residents and raise funds for medical care. This initiative of “warming the community through sports and supporting public welfare with passion” not only won wide recognition from the community but also extended the value of squash beyond the court, conveying warmth and a sense of responsibility.
May 16, 2025 – (Youth Light Theme) – Sunlight Youth Leadership – Club Exchange Activity
To “promote diverse cultural exchanges among clubs and recruit new members”, the foundation organizes an annual display and exchange activity among various clubs. By expanding the influence of the public welfare associations, it advocates that young people pay attention to community development and support community medical fundraising.
Display the operating projects of each club and the club activity plans, promote cooperation opportunities, and convey the core idea of “individual micro-lights merge into community warm currents”. Deepen diverse cultural exchanges, fully utilize the advantages of the Sunlight Foundation’s cross-club communication platform, provide display windows for clubs with distinctive features in different fields (such as public welfare, art, business, technology, etc.) – through special project performances, cultural salons, etc., allowing members to share their club culture and service experiences (such as music public welfare, technological assistance for the elderly, etc.). This not only breaks the information barriers between clubs but also enables teenagers to broaden their horizons through cultural collisions, learn to respect differences, draw on diverse wisdom, and solidify the “empathy and inclusiveness” in leadership.
At the same time, it also showcases to the public, recruits new members, and activates the vitality of clubs: Taking advantage of the opportunity for centralized display of each club, design “experiential interactive booths” and “club roadshows” and other sections, allowing potential new members to experience the charm and value of different clubs intuitively. Help each public welfare association efficiently absorb like-minded teenagers’ strength, inject fresh vitality into the sustainable development of the club, and expand the youth influence of public welfare services.
Simultaneously, carry out fundraising activities such as “charity sales” and “talent crowdfunding”, and the funds raised will be directed to community medical projects.
This not only makes the concept of “concerning community development” deeply rooted in people’s minds, but also transforms teenagers’ leadership practice into a practical community value, achieving “activity influence – public welfare action power – community sense of gain”.
Core Vision: With “Youth Light”, let each club gather strength through communication, and let teenagers grow into caring and responsible leaders through connection, using the power of youth to illuminate the path of community public welfare.

June 13, 2025 – Charity Auction Fundraising
The Youth Association of the Sunshine Foundation is organizing an annual large-scale charity auction fundraising event. The core purpose is to raise funds for medical projects, allowing teenagers to understand social responsibility and empathy through practice, while also expanding the social influence of the medical assistance program and attracting more people to pay attention to community medical development and participate.
Advocating for the youth group, parents, community residents and enterprises to participate in the transmission of the value of fundraising: Let more people know that “small donations can also accumulate into the power of medical assistance”.
The event promoted the growth of teenagers: Through the efforts in the preparation and execution, they demonstrated their ability to independently plan and communicate and collaborate, making charity become a “practical classroom” for young people’s growth. Through the topic of the charity auction, the medical assistance program of the foundation was brought to more people’s attention and support.
With teenagers as the link, it led families and communities to pay attention to the medical disadvantaged groups, forming “caring and mutual assistance” to promote neighborhood friendship and promoting the popularization of the concept of charity.

June 22nd, 2025 – TEDx Youth@Mageeune
Athena Yu, one of the founders of the Sunshine Foundation and an initiator of the TEDx Youth@Magee event – which was held in the Magee High School auditorium in Vancouver – marked the grand opening of the TEDx Youth@Magee youth conference initiated and planned by the Sunshine Foundation’s chairperson Athena Yu. This conference brought together passionate middle school students, education experts, and community representatives to the Magee auditorium, engaging in in-depth ideological exchanges around “Technology and Education”, and writing the ideological manifesto of the Z Generation. As an independently organized event authorized by TED, this conference was led throughout the process by a core team composed of middle school students led by Athena Yu. They, with their leadership skills, debate, speeches, technology, education research and other diverse expertise, jointly pursued the vision of “Making the voices of youth heard”. It received strong support from Mingde College and the Sunshine Foundation, as well as extensive publicity coverage from various media.
The conference officially began at 9:30 in the morning. The student host, experienced Cynthia Yu, led the hosting team consisting of osbrsong Song, Kitty Sun, and they began the event by reciting poems in an innovative form, breaking the stereotype of traditional activities. The co-organizer, Dr. Tina from Mingde College, in her speech, clearly stated: “Today is not about adults teaching young people how to think, but about young people showing the world how they think.” This affirmed the core role of teenagers in redefining the future of education.
The presentation session became the core scene for the exchange of ideas. The teenagers shared from three dimensions: AI ethics, self-awareness, and counterattack against consumerism. They conducted a two-way dialogue from discussing ideas to proposing action paths, demonstrating profound insights and independent thinking on social issues. At the end of the event, Canadian Member of Parliament Zai Zeguang delivered the closing speech, promising to transform “government support for youth technology education innovation” from a “problem” to an “action”, and stating that he would bring the conference’s ideas back to the parliament to promote relevant policies. Subsequently, he and the core team jointly presented award certificates to the speakers.
This five-hour conference not only conveyed profound thoughts on the integration of technology and education, but also confirmed that “the minds of teenagers are not unfinished products, but ongoing changes.” Just as Richard Saul Wurman, the founder of TED, said, “The power of ideas lies in the fact that they can make others think even further.” And TAXIS at Magee has proved through practice that when young people take the lead in thinking, they can not only illuminate their own future but also ignite new possibilities for society.
June 22nd, 2025 – The 8th Sunshine Charity Fundraising and Youth Volunteer Awards Ceremony

Certificates of the “Love Volunteer Performance Award” were also presented to all members of the choir. As one of the most influential youth music organizations in Vancouver, the Magee Choir provided a high-level musical performance for this ceremony, demonstrating the deep integration of youth art and charity. This donation further strengthened the cooperative relationship between the school, the community, and the youth charity organization.
Linda Xu, the chairperson of the Parent Committee of the Sunshine Foundation, and her daughter, Athena Yu, the founder and current chairperson of the Sunshine Foundation, stepped onto the stage together to express the Foundation’s most sincere gratitude to all the guests for their presence and long-term support! Linda also specifically thanked her daughter, Athena. When she was a fifth-grader in primary school, she founded the Sunshine Foundation with her mother’s support. Now, eight years have passed, and she is about to enter Stanford University, a world-renowned school, to start a new chapter of her life. And the Sunshine Foundation has also gone through eight years since its establishment. Thanks to the joint efforts of over 2000 families, we have achieved today’s accomplishments!
Linda said, “We are particularly grateful to every loving parent in society. You carry the spirit of charitable and public welfare dedication, setting a good example for children. Whenever we need fundraising, you always reach out to help first. We have raised over one hundred thousand Canadian dollars in donations, bringing substantial help and far-reaching influence to the community. Thank you very much to the Sunshine Family, who love each other and are harmonious and warm! We are grateful for the unity and cooperation, which has received praise from government officials and parliamentarians, as well as media attention. The young leaders on this stage have all shown their best side: confidence, optimism, mutual assistance, and unity and love. It is their smiles that inspire us, making them an influential youth group in the community. Through such activities, they motivate more people to pay attention to charitable and public welfare, care about community medical development, and positively guide and support the growth of teenagers! They become the link and bridge for community public welfare development! Let’s continue to strive, releasing the sunshine-like love to warm the world!”
Athena then delivered her speech, saying, “This event holds great significance for me. As not only the chairperson of the Sunshine Foundation but also a participant and witness to its growth, over the years, I have had the privilege of witnessing the growth of countless young people and gaining a deep understanding of their family stories behind them. These real experiences and the spirit of dedication have continuously inspired me, and have also strengthened our belief in the power of young people. Tonight, everyone will hear some young leaders sharing the projects they have completed in the past year. Their efforts and achievements are touching. I would like to express my deepest respect to all the families that support young people. You are the most solid force behind the children! Thank you!”
Federal Congressman Taleeb Noormohamed delivered a speech at the event. He said, “Today, we are gathered here to celebrate the achievements of a group of outstanding young people. They not only made significant contributions to their communities but also devoted themselves to public welfare and served missions that went beyond themselves. Through your actions, you have proven that change does not come by chance, but is created by yourselves. Your public welfare practices and community actions are not only worthy of praise but also an indispensable force for society. Each of the young people who have been honoured tonight is a symbol of the hope for the future of society. Your actions have not only influenced the people around you but also inspired the entire community. Remember, you are not alone. Behind you is the entire community’s support and pride for you. The future will not fall from the sky; it needs us to build it together!”

2025 – Sunshine Youth Leadership Team Webinar
Sunshine Foundation Youth Leaders; Regularly held webinars, supported by the Sunshine Social Network platform, focus on key issues in club development to create an efficient communication scene. It not only anchors the direction for the sustainable development of youth clubs but also serves as an important practical carrier for leadership training and growth.
I. Core Objectives: To clarify medium and long-term goals around club development plans, such as expanding the scope of public welfare services and building a member cultivation system; combining annual activity planning and implementation paths, such as the process design of the “Youth Light” exchange activity and the resource connection for community medical fundraising activities; such as new member recruitment and training plans and the enhancement of club brand influence.
II. The convenience of the Sunshine Social Network platform breaks geographical and time constraints, enabling club members from different countries, cities, and campuses to achieve real-time interaction, opening up the exchange of diverse community cultures and enhancing decision-making efficiency and the feasibility of solutions through collective wisdom.
III. The webinar has established a “horizontal exchange, vertical inheritance” mechanism for healthy development.
For example: 1) In the horizontal dimension, clubs share their unique experiences in topic discussions, such as the operation skills of Club A’s “Online Public Welfare Check-in Activity” and Club B’s “School-Enterprise Cooperation Fundraising Model”, promoting the flow of high-quality resources across clubs and creating a “one person contributes ideas, all benefit” sharing atmosphere.
2) In the vertical dimension, both new and old members participate in planning discussions. Old members pass on club operation experience, while new members bring innovative ideas, facilitating the inheritance and iteration of club culture and operation experience.
3) From the perspective of public welfare value, through collective refinement of activity planning and development plans, club activities are made more in line with community needs. For example, for the “Community Medical Fundraising” topic, multiple club suggestions are integrated to form a “online promotion and引流 + offline charity sale implementation” linked plan, significantly enhancing the precision and influence of public welfare actions.
4) Youth leadership development; The webinar is a “practical training ground” for leadership and organizational skills. In topic coordination, leading members need to sort out the discussion framework in advance and guide the topic direction, exercising the ability to control the agenda and coordinate communication; in the refinement of solutions, members need to combine their club experience to offer suggestions and refute doubts, cultivating logical thinking and problem-solving skills; in the subsequent project implementation, each club needs to enhance execution and teamwork skills based on the previous plan.
5) Cross-club exchanges allow members to break away from a single perspective, broaden their horizons by learning others’ operation skills, and form a growth awareness of “benchmarking against the advanced and optimizing oneself”.
6) The Sunshine Foundation Youth Group Webinar, with “precise topics + efficient platform” at its core, not only optimizes the allocation of club development resources and improves the quality and efficiency of public welfare actions but also enables young people to achieve comprehensive growth in leadership, organization, and collaboration in practice, becoming an important carrier for the foundation to cultivate young public welfare leaders.
